Packing for your House Move

Packing can be a back breaking, time consuming job. You can take the stress out of packing by taking advantage of our packing service! We offer full and partial packing services, contact us for more details!

Planning out Packing for your House Move

Once you have your packing supplies and are ready to start, it’s important to plan your approach. Avoid packing items you might need to access before the move. Given the uncertainty of firm moving dates in the industry, packing in an organised order and following a schedule can significantly streamline the process.

Non Essentials: A good place to start is with the non essential items, for example seasonal clothing and books. Taking pictures down off walls and carefully wrapping them and placing ones small enough into boxes is a good idea at the early packing stage as well.

Winding down on more regularly used items: Items such as kitchenware can slowly be packed leading up to the move date. Don’t pack everything too early and leave yourself with nothing, but slowly empty the cupboards and eventually leave yourself with the bare minimum for the week of the move.

By committing to pack in well in advance of your house move you will avoid a stressful run up to the big day. The aim should be to leave yourself an easy final week of packing.

Pro Packing Tips

  • Declutter: Organise your belongings! Go over all of your belongings, you may find some things that you have long forgotten about that you don’t want to move to your new home and maybe just dispose of.
  • Kitchenware packing: It is quicker using packing paper or alternatively newspaper to safely wrap and protect things such as pottery. Bubble wrapping every separate plate would take an eternity compared to just placing a plate in a box with some scrunched up paper for protection and in our experience it does the job just as well!
  • Labelling: Label every box you pack with the room you want it placed in at your new home, this will save time on your moving day as your removal team won’t need to keep asking where a certain box is going! Also label fragile boxes so your removal team knows which boxes need to be handled with care and stacked accordingly with more protection in the van.
  • Dismantling: If you choose to dismantle your furniture yourself it is a good idea to pack all loose screws and bolts etc, into clear plastic bags with labels on for the piece of furniture they are for.
  • Large fragile items: Items such as TVs or large pictures/paintings likely won’t fit in boxes. A good idea is to wrap them with items such as towels or bedding. This gives them solid protection, alternatively bubble wrap is always perfect for these kinds of items. It is also a good idea to remove light bulbs from lamps for separate packaging.
  • Softer items: Items such as cushions, clothes and curtains etc may not need to be packed into boxes, bin liners do a great job for soft items, you fill bin bags and tie them closed and it can even be more efficient packing them in the removal van as they don’t require the rigidity that boxes offer meaning they can fill tight gaps and spaces in a van that otherwise may not be filled.
